Build Update #4: Knock on Wood
SpencerHausCraftedited
Real wood grain, 40 more plants and our very first palm. Here's what's new since Build Update #3, and all of it is live now.
Cabinets in real wood
A row of cabinets can now be finished in oak, maple, cherry or walnut, with the wood's grain running up the doors. You can also paint it any color (white when none is set) or finish it from an image. For hardware, pick black bars, 6 in on doors and 10 in on wide drawers, or tall brushed steel bars.
A row's Kind switches it between base, upper and tall, and it keeps its line, widths and finish. A row can now be as tall as the wall, up to 20 ft, for ceilings over 9 ft. Panel is new under Create > Inside: a finished end panel, ¾ in thick to start, in the same woods and colors, to go beside an oven, a dishwasher or a refrigerator.
40 more plants, and gravel
There are 40 more species, 68 in all, from across the country: southern magnolia, eastern redbud, flowering dogwood, sugar maple, bald cypress, ponderosa pine, eastern white pine, Colorado blue spruce, Douglas fir and more. And the foxtail palm, our first palm. Each one knows its hardiness zones and the states it's native to, and your lot keeps its own zone and state.
A plant can go in from a pot size, like 3 gal or 15 gal, and grows to its species' full size. Pick a plant and drag its sides or top to keep it pruned smaller or let it grow bigger.
Gravel is a new area: crushed stone, pea gravel, river rock, lava rock or crushed granite. Plant models are lighter too, so yards load faster.
Floors with real grain
Wood floors now have real grain: oak, maple, hickory, walnut, pine and knotty pine, laid over the floor's color.
Flooring from a photo repeats at true size, as wide as you set it. A stair can be finished in the flooring of the room it climbs to, on every tread and riser. Where two buildings open into each other, the floor under the opened wall is laid in the room's flooring.

In the editor
- Copy style and Paste style (⇧⌥⌘C, ⇧⌥⌘V, in the menu and in ⌘K) copy how a thing looks, its paint, finish, siding, color and hardware, onto others of its kind, without its sizes or place.
- Align ceilings: pick a building and line up the other buildings' ceilings with it, by their wall heights alone.
- Align reads plainly now: "Align west sides", "Align centers on one north–south line", "Space evenly west to east".
- A stair turns any way: 15° at a time with the ring, or to the degree with ⌥.
- An area dragged near another snaps to its corners and sides.
- When something can't be done, Klaus's log shows it with a red dot and the fixes as buttons under it, worded the way a builder would say it: what's wrong first, then what to do.
- Each outside wall's panel has Left open, so a side opened by the Roof tool can be closed again.
- On a phone, the tools sit in a dock along the bottom, and Klaus's pane stands taller.
Your lot
- Set each side of a grade's bank on its own, with a handle for each side.
- A grade can fill around what's on it, leaving buildings and decks where they stand, and a mound can raise what's on it.
- A pool sits on the highest ground or paving under it.
- Spray paint follows a grade.
Buildings
- Sliding doors fit in a door's frame, with any number of panels, in a color of their own.
- Posts can be wood, a steel pole, a steel pole cased in boards, or a block column. A carport can stand on an aluminum frame.
- A crawl space can be dug below ground (Below ground, up to 48 in), and its height is measured from the ground to the underside of the subfloor.
- The steps between two buildings that meet are a stair of their own, so you choose what they're built of. Floors less than a riser apart meet with no step, and an uncased or arched opening between buildings is uncased or arched on both sides.
- A property made from an address is named by its street, like "Main St".
Community
- Recent builds have their own section on the home page.
Fixes
- A property with spray paint on a grade opens again.
- Steps between buildings on graded ground are the right height.
- A building picked whole has its own panel and Duplicate again.
- A floor's settings paste onto another floor.
- A wood floor over a block wall is framed inside the block.
